Carried on Eagles’ Wings

God does not stand far off when his people cry out to him. Instead he steps in to rescue them at the time of his choosing. He employs different methods to help us. But there is one image that we cannot forget—that of an eagle carrying her young ones in flight.

For God said, “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself” (Exodus 19:4 NIV) [emphasis added].

#1. The first thing to note is that God steps in to help us when we have lost all our strength. The eagle when it teaches its young to fly will wait till the eaglet drops downwards having lost strength to fly.

Then the mother eagle which is keenly watching what is happening swoops down in swift flight and gets underneath the falling eaglet and holds it up on its outstretched wings. Therefore let us take courage at this promise, “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27 NIV) [emphasis added].

#2. Secondly, “eagles’ wings” refers to the ease with which God carries us through difficult situations. The gravity, burden and weight of circumstances keep pulling us down. The problems facing us are too numerous. At this time, when we are most helpless, God acts on our behalf.

He often sends people our way who can bring us help. Sometimes such help comes from most unexpected people. The timing of such help is sometimes beyond belief. Those are times when we literally feel carried on eagles’ wings!

We know for sure during such times that only God, he alone, can make things happen in our favour. Yes, God does what is unthinkable to the human mind with ease.

#3. Finally, “eagles’ wings” gives us the picture of mighty strength that God has. When he acts nobody stands against him. Let us be glad that in God we have a tower of strength. We can run to him and be safe. There is a place of safety for us even in storms for we are carried on eagles’ wings.

Know that no one can snatch you from that position (see John 10:28, 29).

Above all else, you should remember that God delivers you for a purpose. He carries you on eagles’ wings with a desire that you’ll continue to walk with him. He desires that you fully obey him. And then he will have a special place of responsibility and honour kept ready for you (see Exodus 19:5, 6)!
